We're Rising Readers, a teen-led initiative founded with the desire
to spread the fundamental right of education throughout the world.
to spread the fundamental right of education throughout the world.
Why We Started
Reading at home can motivate children to keep learning, and it's important they remain eager about their education in order to achieve their fullest potential. Unfortunately, two-thirds of children living in poverty in the United States don't have books at home. That's why we created Rising Readers. Because books have had a huge impact on our lives and encouraged us to keep learning, we wanted others to have that same opportunity.
Rising Readers's goal is to reach as many homes as possible. We want a world where each child loves to learn and has a book to read!

- With the help of Shaker High School's Key Club, we collected over 600 books to donate to United Way of the Greater Capital Region. We donated in time for their annual 5/18 day, so we were featured on the news. Check out the video here!

- We made bookmarks at HOBY NYE's Community Leadership Workshop (CLeW) at Shaker High School to donate along with books. We had a bookmark table set at the library for little kids to make bookmarks.
- At the end of the school year, we went through the trash cans to see if there were any salvageable school supplies left. We were able to collect over 135 pounds of notebooks, binders, folders, and more to donate to United Way of the Greater Capital Region!
- With our donations from our successful book drive at the Colonie Library, we were able to donate to lots of local organizations, such as the South End Children's Cafe. At the South End Children's Cafe in Albany, we read multiple books and donated 36 personalized book bundles to kids.
